DJCAD Social Digital 18

Portfolio Description

A niche exhibition lighting project with conceptual and detailed design input. The project also demonstrates a supportive link to design students from the DJCAD product design school.

A project borne from an approach by 4th year DJCAD product design student, Julie Cumming, who had interviewed us as part of her 4th year project research into design workspaces. The Social Digital design programme that Julie was working through at DJCAD emphasizes the development of human-centered innovations. Julie went on to design and build a bespoke contemporary wooden desk as a result of her research, and it was to be exhibited along with the work of her classmates at the annual DJCAD Degree Show.

Building upon Julie’s initial connection, we were approached by the class exhibition production team for lighting design advice. They had designed a set of modular display furniture for the exhibition and were unsure of how to light it successfully. Having established the brief, we developed a set of optional lighting concepts and then prepared a detailed design and bill of materials for the favoured solution. The favoured concept was to utilise linear LED strips concealed at the front of the canopy for general display front lighting and a secondary strip concealed above the back panel suspensions for light wash to the information screens. We also organised product samples to supplement the show, courtesy of Louis Poulsen, XAL, and Exenia (Kelvin Lighting).

The students took forward the procurement and installation of the lighting systems to great effect, and the Social Digital exhibition was well received with a lot of visitor engagement. We went on to support the DJCAD Social Digital Guru’s Day in 2017 and 2018.
