Montrose Museum

Portfolio Description

Demonstrating our capability to drive a low-energy adaptable building services concept for the proposed modernisation and extension of this regional museum in Angus.

The Montrose Museum is located in the conservation area on the edge of the town centre and has been Category B listed since 1971. The original museum was one of the first purpose-built museums in Scotland, and the proposed redevelopment of the site is an exciting prospect for Montrose and its community. Replanning of internal spaces in the existing buildings will offer improved visitor access and flow and includes a reimagining of the collection displays, whilst an extension aims for the addition of a cafe, activity space and expanded exhibitions.

The existing building is constructed as two connected blocks, using red sandstone in the neo-classical style. Externally there are detailed stone features and ornate metal windows, some of which present useful opportunities for sensitive integration with the building services strategies. A new extension in a contrasted contemporary architectural style will demand recognition of the site’s modernisation whilst driving increased footfall with the visibility of the new spaces and cafe.

The building services systems covered by our conceptual work include ventilation, heating and cooling, domestic water, power, lighting and emergency lighting, cable containment, fire alarms, security systems, structured data, and building controls. Rooftop solar PV was considered for passive onsite electricity generation and a summary of passive solar control opportunities is also included to protect gallery exhibits and internal temperatures below. The proximity of the museum site to neighbouring residential homes required early attention be given to new louvre and cowl positions to help minimise the impacts from fan noise emissions. An external lighting concept forms part of our scope and targets the sensitive enhancement of traditional building elements alongside the contemporary.
